and Hula Competition. For details visit the District website: http://portal.clubrunner.ca/50010/Event/f52793bf-77ae-4602-9bca-7a7154bd9563 The highlight of the event is the Cardboard Boat Race which is hysterically funny, but very competitive. Does your club want to compete? We will also have a Chili Competition and even a Hula Competition! The District 5280 Rotaract and Interact clubs plan and run games for all ages. There is also swimming in the Seaside Lagoon and a great water slide. We have some seating, but urge everyone who has a beach chair to bring it along! There is no charge for the picnic, but we hope every club in the district will provide food or will contribute funds to help pay for this event. We already have generous donations of hot dogs, Korean BBQ and a Roasted Pig! - See more at: http://portal.clubrunner.ca/50010/Event/f52793bf-77ae-4602-9bca-7a7154bd9563#sthash.6rceRmdA.dpufThe highlight of the event is the Cardboard Boat Race which is hysterically funny, but very competitive. The trip is from February 5 to 9, 2015. The indigenous people living outside Guatemala's major cities are the most wonderful people you can meet but also the poorest in our hemisphere. The population is expanding faster than the general services they require for education, health and general infrastructure, such as clean water. The Rotary Clubs of District 5280, along with the Rotary Clubs of Guatemala have collaborated on six Global Grant projects to help the Guatemalans living in the countryside. The humanitarian trip attendees will experience first-hand the wonderful achievements from our generous donations. Trip headquarters will be in the former colonial capital of Central America, Antigua. Antigua is protected as a UNESCO city heritage site. Accommodations: Accommodations are at the Hotel Casa Santo Domingo, ranked by travel magazines as one of the top 100 hotels in the world. Day bus trips will be provided to visit the Rotary projects our District and Guatemala Rotary are sponsoring. The projects are mostly outside Antigua, traveling into the lush countryside, known as the land of the eternal spring and for its indigenous culture. Payment Details: The basic trip is $1600/person with airfare. Also offered is a one-day optional trip to Tikal (additional cost) and a Post-Trip to Isla de Roatan, Honduras Feb. 9-13, 2015 (additional cost). Please see the registration form for additional details. The deadline to register is September 15, 2014. Only 120 spaces are available and it is first come, first served. A deposit of $800 is due on September 15, 2014. The balance is due November 15, 2014. You can register online or by printing out the registration form provided and returning with payment to the District Office. |

The Pumpkin Festival is a weekend of family fun that is brought to us by the Calabasas Chamber of Commerce and the City of Calabasas. The Rotary Club of Woodland Hills will be raising funds for the many wonderful projects we put on each year by coordinating and staffing the Pumpkin Painting area. This is one of the most enjoyable areas in the festival as the children (and sometimes even the adults) get to paint a pumpkin. If you are interested in helping out, the event is on Saturday, 10/18/14 and Sunday, 10/19/14. The shifts for our area are from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and 12:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. each day. We need volunteers for each of the four shifts in the Pumpkin Painting area. Located along Lost Hills Road & Juan Bautista de Anza Park at 3701 Lost Hills Road, Calabasas, CA 91302. Directions: Take the 101 Freeway - Exit Lost Hills Rd. in Calabasas then follow the signs to easy free parking! |

For the past 42 years Rotarians have provided support for the Braille Institute Student Holiday Party, and we are excited to tell you about some changes to the format of this year’s event. In order to allow more students to partake in the festivities, we will host two Holiday Parties during one week. The scheduled dates are December 3 and 4, from 10:00 A.M.-12:00 noon. The theme for this year’s celebration is Holiday Cabaret Fiesta. There will be refreshments and entertainment provided by the Braille Institute staff, and we would love it if you could be a part of the festivities. Please choose which day you would like to attend, and let us know at your earliest convenience. If you would like to be a part of our Holiday Cabaret Fiesta, we’re asking that you arrive at 9:30 a.m. for a short briefing of the day’s activities which begin promptly at 10:00 A.M. We would love to have 25-35 Rotarian volunteers to assist us on each day of the Holiday Cabaret Fiesta. Rotarian duties will be to Seat, Serve, and Socialize with our students. RSVP to Rotarian Jim Miceli by Monday, November 24, 2014 regarding your club’s interest in joining us for the Holiday Party, by calling Jim at 818-763-5693, or by sending an email to JimMiceli@aol.com. Empowering People with Cancer
Jan 21, 2015
Art Connolly is a three-time cancer survivor, having been diagnosed with prostate cancer in 1997, thyroid cancer in 2006, and adenocarcinoma in 2008. He had to undergo surgery for all three occurrences and went through six months of chemotherapy for the adenocarcinoma. During a visit to his oncologist, he noticed a brochure for the Cancer Support Community (then called The Wellness Community) in the waiting room and joined the organization as a volunteer. “I believe the Cancer Support Community has helped me grow a lot,” says Art. “Being in a support group has made me a better listener. My wife and I have made several very good friends, as I like to put it, ‘The kind of friendships that used to happen only in foxholes in wartime.'” |

Jan 31, 2015 8:30 AM - 3:30 PM
The conference will focus on successful, sustainable local projects benefiting members of our own communities, with financial help from international partnerships and the Rotary Foundation. While all concepts presented at STEPS in previous years have applied to projects abroad and at home, at STEPS 2015, we will showcase exciting projects benefiting our part of the world! This cutting edge day will provide you the tools and connections for starting new projects and partnerships both in your own back yard and globally. Our Keynote speakers will inspire you to discover terrific opportunities to break the cycles of poverty (economic, educational, health…) in our own communities. Our breakout speakers will emphasize the importance of needs assessment, the planning process, and discuss proven strategies for successful projects. Attendees will leave with the inspiration and ability to help guide their own Rotary clubs to initiate, plan and implement sustainable community-based projects. The fee for the event is $25.
