Rotary Youth Outreach is a program that gives Rotary Clubs the opportunity to share new experiences with under privileged children. Join us for Roald Dahl's Matilda The Musical at the beautiful Segerstrom Center for the Arts. Thanks to the generosity of Rotarians and the Segerstrom Center the cost of this day has been significantly discounted. The cost includes the theater performance and lunch. Sponsoring Rotary Clubs are responsible for transportation and appropriate clothing for the children attending the theater. Clubs may purchase tickets for deserving children and an appropriate number of Rotarian chaperones. Child participants suggested age is between 7-11 years old. Deputy Mayor Economic Opportunity Brenda Shockley oversees homelessness, economic and workforce development, reentry, housing and community development, veteran's affair and Federal Promise Zone designation for Los Angeles. Prior to joining the Mayor Garceitti's team, she was prresident of Community Build, whose mission twas to revitalize South Los Angeles through human investment and commercial and economic development. Shockley's work to revitalize communities in South L.A. has led to more than $100 million of investment in education, employment and training programs for young people.

Retired Los Angeles City Council Dennis P. Zine was elected to represent the Third District, west San Fernando Valley in n 2001. He was reelected in 2005 and 2009, and under the City's term limits, was unable to be reelected again. After his election, he expanded his government service role as the President of the Independent Cities Association (ICA) and the City's representative with the National League of Cities serving as a member of the Board of Directors. Prior to serving on the City Council, Zine was an officer with the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) for over 28 years. During his tenure with the LAPD he was elected three times to the Board of Directors of the Police Protective League, representing the 9,100 rank and file officers.

Kathleen Sterling is an award-winning journalist and the publisher of three weekly newspapers in Los Angeles: Warner Center News, Valley Vantage and Las Virgenes Enterprise. She graduated from USC and received a MBA from UCLA's Anderson School of Management. Sterling started her first newspaper at the age of twenty-two. She and her husband Rodger worked together for twenty-five years until his death in 2009. |

Enjoy at day at the races with fellow Rotarians at Santa Anita Race Track. There is an optional 45-minute behind the scenes tour that begins at 9:30 a.m. Meet at 9 a.m. for the tour. Gates for the racing open at 10:30 a.m. and the first race is at 12:30 p.m. The day at the races includes the optional tour, Club House seating, and lunch. Cost is $55 per person. Fiona and her father Craig Huxley, have been co-producing and co-hosting a mixed-media documentary. Together they have started an initiative...Elephant LifeForce...to raise awareness for wildlife conservation. Craig is a winning producer, musician/composer,and actor. Craig started as a child prodigy musician gaining fame from his Piano Trio, winning NBC Showcase (tying with Sly & the Family Stone.). After working on wildlife films with tigers, wolves, whales, bears, hippos, sea lions, and chimps, it was time to explore the largest land mammal in all it’s glory. Fiona is a singer/songwriter, actress,model, host, and wildlife spokesperson. Fiona has always been a wildlife enthusiast and is excited to educate and share her artistry to people spanning continents and generations. |

The First Act: As a young German boy Henry Oster survived deprivation in the Lodz Ghetto, a life-or-death selection in the Birkenau extermination camp, a firing squad in Auschwitz, being strafed by an Allied fighter, and starvation in Buchenwald. Henry rebuilt his life in America, arriving at 18 with no family, no English, no money and no education. Of 2,011 Jews uprooted from Cologne, Germany in 1941, he is the only survivor. The Second Act: Our club and the West Valley-Warner Center Chamber of Commerce honor the officers and staff of the Topanga Police Station under the leadership of Captain Maureen Ryan. |

Fleet Street has been contracted to do bike valet for the final stage of the Amgen Tour of California. The ride is California’s version of the Tour de France (which lasts 21 days) but is this one is only seven days. It began in Northern California and Stage 4 is from Santa Barbara to Santa Clarita (passing near Ojai); Stage 5 is from Ontario to Mt Baldy; Stage 6 is around Big Bear Lake. Most important, STAGE 7 on May 20 starts at Mountain High Ski Resort and ends at the Pasadena Convention Center. |

We meet on Sunday, May 21 at 9:30 a.m. at the Crate and Barrel parking lot on the corner of Victory and Topanga Canyon for the ceremony. Two teachers nominated by the committee are being honored. The Demotion Dinner is at the North Ranch Country Club in Westlake Village. This is always a well-attended event by members and their guests. Let's have 100% attendance this year! RotaCare is a free healthcare clinic for people who are uninsured or underinsured. The clinic is a pilot project for the development of additional clinics in the Greater Los Angeles Region. The clinic is staffed by volunteer medical personnel. The clinic is solely supported through philanthropy. Gwen Petrick is managing the project. |
