President's Message
Fellow Rotarians,

Happy New Year to all and especially to my fellow members of the Rotary Club of Woodland Hills. December was another month of our club practicing Service Above Self.

We did a wonderful project on Dec 4 at Gigi’s Playhouse for Down syndrome kids. Gifts, activities, hot chocolate, and Santa Claus made for a fun and rewarding experience for evereyone.

Saturday Dec 7 we gave away bikes at the Angel City Celebration at Magic Johnson Park. It is a traditional event for our club helping district 5280 make the holidays special for kids in South Los Angeles. The next day we participated in a new district event decorating table top Christmas trees and traditional Hanukkah menorahs. It was a fun way to celebrate the end of 2024. We prepped and cooked at the Rescue Mission and facilitated a special decorating project with the children.

On Friday Dec 13 we sponsored the ONEgeneration Holiday Talent Show. Later in the evening Santa and his Rotarian elves visited the kids daycare center’s holiday party. Eva Hainer of course, sat on Santa’s lap. On Saturday the 14 we partnered with Rotary Club of Granada Hills for a fun wreath making project at The Woodlands. Bette West did a great job of designing wreaths and Bryna organized our participation.

On Wed. Dec. 18 our club had two booths at the West Valley Warner Center Chamber of Commerce Holiday Boutique and Party. Ferne raised funds by selling her books and promoted the Human Trafficking Event on Jan 11. Paulinda represented us at the Ovarian Cancer Circle event. Later that night our club sponsored Santa's visit to the Boys and Girls Club of West Hills Holiday Party at Pinstripes.

On Sunday Dec 22 we helped the girls at Pacific Lodge to have a fun karaoke night with cold snacks from the refrigerator we donated this month. Our Cardz For Kidz were delivered all over the valley to help almost 3,500 homeless and sheltered veterans and seniors.

The club was saddened by the loss of Gary Koch and extend our love to Lois and the family.

Please invite your friends and community to our January 8th Officers of the Year Awards for LAPD Topanga Division at Pinstripes. Doors open at 11 a.m. for this special first club meeting of 2025.

Let us continue to provide H.O.P.E. in the year to follow.

Stories
Combating Human Trafficking
There is a heinous crime against our children going on in our neighborhoods and most of us are not even aware of it. Did you know that more than 3,000 children every year in California alone become victims of human sex trafficking, destroying their lives and their families? These young girls and boys are raped repeatedly, beaten often, suffer horrific lives, and only 1% is ever found.

The Rotary Club of Woodland Hills is working diligently with other Rotary clubs in the San Fernando Valley to lessen this scrouge and save our children. On January 11, 2025, the 2nd annual human trafficking event will take place in Woodland Hills. Please see the above flyer for details and come to learn how you can protect your family from the internet and these criminals. Don't forget to RSVP

Gingerbread Houses and Holiday Wreaths
The Granada Hills Rotary Club held a festive holiday gingerbread house and wreath making event for the families living on the campus of Hope the Mission Woodland Hills. Some Girl Scouts, Rotarians from Rotary Club of Woodland Hills and Pepperdine University Rotaract came out to support the project.

Gary Alan Koch

My sweet husband left this earth on Thursday, December 5th. He was a kind and loving husband and I will miss him so much. Gary Alan Koch of Agoura Hills passed away peacefully on December 5, 2024, with his wife, Lois, by his side. Gary was born to Maurice and Judith Koch on June 1, 1952, in Los Angeles. He spent his childhood and young adult life in Marin County and relocated to Los Angeles in the late 1970’s.
