President's Message
Fellow Rotarians,

Rotary Club of  Woodland Hills,  Happy New Year. Congrats to all on a great new year. We have started the new Rotary Year 2024-2025 with lots of new  beginnings. July, the seventh month of year the club held seven events that can be proud of. We do bring HOPE to the world!

First, we moved to Pinstripes in the Topanga Mall where our space can hold up to 100+ people and we have a larger space when needed for bigger events. Second, we now have two new committees, Veterans Services and Senior Services, that have been funded by our members and a fabulous donor will still match all monies donated to Veterans Services. Third, we are now signed up to facilitate Bingo every month at Los Angeles Jewish Health at Eisenberg Village.  The residents there are mostly Medi-Cal and will appreciate our gifts and cash when they win games. Please sign up with Joe Flores who is chairing our senior efforts. Fourth, Community Services has already cooked at the SFV Rescue Mission, which we now will do every month. Pami and Christy can help you get a coveted spot.

Five, our Youth Avenues of Service has committed to four Holidays for the Cards from Kids. We will give cards written and drawn by the kids to seniors, vets, homeless, and sheltered people. Shelley Stark and Karen Schnee will take your calls for more information. Sixth, on July 24 we had the first two “Craft Talks,” which will continue for the entire year. Make sure you contact Lois Koch to get on the schedule. Seven, our first fun dinner was held at The Stand on July 31. We raised some funds and had a great time getting together for fun and friendship. Thank you, Jeff and Mona, for organizing this.

August will also be jam packed with special events. On Saturday August 10 there will be training to learn how to write District Grants. On August 17 will be the First District Breakfast; this is always a great way to start the new year. New members who have never been to a District Breakfast can attend for free. Contact President Sandy. On Saturday August 24 is the District Picnic Dash and Splash, which is our Club's favorite activity. We are still looking for a captain for our cardboard boat, On Tuesday August 27 from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. District Governor Albert Hernandez will visit us as well as members from seven other clubs in our district. We will host the first combined event at Pinstripes! Bowling starts at 8 p.m.!

We are a great club, and we did great work in the first month. Thank you all for your efforts.

Stories
Andrea Mogul Scholarships
Long time member Marlowe Mogul and his wife, Gloria, have left a legacy of music and education to the Community with the Andrea Mogul Memorial Scholarships. Andrea Mogul was their only child and she started playing the piano as a child in 1969. She became an accomplished pianist who won many awards. Andrea had a determination to learn the technical complexities of her repertoire choices which would make a professional pianist shudder with fear. Her tour de force was Chopin’s Etude Op.10 #4, which she started working on at 14.  Her tour de force was Chopin’s Etude Op.10 #4, which she started working on at 14.  Click on Read More for the rest of the story

July 24 Meeting
At the July 24 meeting Craft Talks by President-elect Christy Pinto (bottom right photo) and Pami Kaur we learned about their businesses and personal lives. Pami was presented a multiple Paul Harris pin for her contributions to the RI Foundation by PDG and Past President Jay Saltzman (Top Photo: President Sandy Rosenholz on the left). Monique and Dale Mascari of Grocery Outlet in West Hills were honored for their community involvement and in kind donation to fight human trafficking (Left photo).
Meeting Highlights
On July 10th, Michael Van Slooten (l), a former teacher at Oak Park High School, spoke about his year as an exchange student to Chile in 1978.  Michael is pictured above with President Sandy Rosenholz.

August: Membership Recruitment Month
Here are some ideas for celebrating members and growing membership during August:
  • Recognize members for their impact in the community.
  • Set aside a club meeting for "visitor day" and invite prospective members.
  • Look for people who are already involved with Rotary, such as Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholars, Rotaractors, and Exchange students.
  • Use the online course Rotary Basics to help new members learn more about Rotary.
  • Share speeches or discussions about membership from Rotary leaders.
