Shelley's Musings

Dear fellow Rotarians,

I can't believe it's April already.  I'm looking forward to warmer weather and the many Rotary activities we have coming up this month.  We are starting out with another Gather & Give on Saturday, April 8th.  We will come together, have lunch and make much needed kits for the families staying at The Ronald McDonald House.  They spend very long days at the hospital and the snack kits are very helpful for them.  The birthday celebration kits for children who will be having a birthday while they are staying at the House makes them feel special and shows that the community cares.  I hope to see many of you at my home on the 8th to give back to our community and to enjoy each other's company over lunch.

April 15th will be the Pageant of the Arts finals and our club is sponsoring Michelle Bi, a pianist attending Oak Park High School.  The Pageant will begin at 1 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Glendale - 134 N Kenwood St, Glendale. On Saturday, April 22nd we will be joining with other Rotary clubs and participating in a valley cleanup day from 9 – 11 a.m. to celebrate Earth Day. More information to come!

We are all looking forward to our outing to the Reagan Library on Sunday, April 23rd to see the Auschwitz exhibit at 10:15 a.m. followed by lunch together.  Thank you to Paul Gross and Mona Spector for planning this event.  Finally, RYLA is the weekend of April 28th - 30th and our club once again is sponsoring three students who will participate in this wonderful youth leadership program.  Wow! It's going to be a busy month and I look forward to sharing it with each and every Rotarian in our club as we work hard to help our community and enjoy one another's company.

Warmly,

Shelley

Stories
Dale Barnes: Rotarian of the Month
April's Rotarian of the month is Dale Barnes.  Dale has been a long-time member and past president of the Woodland Hills Rotary Club.  She was formerly the president of the La Jolla Golden Triangle Rotary club in San Diego. She will be starting a new chapter in her life when she moves next month to Arizona.  Dale will probably be president of whatever Rotary club she ends up joining in the Grand Canyon state! We will miss her greatly and wish her all the best knowing that she will carry on as a truly great Rotarian.  Personally, I'm (Shelley) thankful to Dale for introducing me to the Woodland Hills Rotary Club and for that I will always be grateful.  Dale's many contributions to our club will always be remembered.
Welcomes New Members Christine Pinto and Joe Flores
Christine Pinto is a native of Southern California and has lived in Woodland Hills for about four and a half years.  She’s been married to James for 20 years, and they have two children: Matthew and Paige and two grandchildren: Hunter and Wyatt.  Christine and her family split their time between Los Angeles and Palm Springs, where they have a home and restaurant.  Christine loves being a real estate agent with Pinnacle Estate Properties at The Vineyards, Porter Ranch. and is looking forward to volunteering time to the Woodland Hills Rotary Club and community.  Joe Flores is the sales and marketing director at Fairwinds–West Hills, which is an independent living and assisted living facility.

Projects Funded by the Board
The Rotary club will be funding the following requests which were approved at our March board meeting:
  • The club contributed $2,500 to assist Rotarians with projects in Belize on the District Humanitarian Trip. Our District funded 11 projects totaling more than $250,000.  The projects range from building much needed bathrooms for seven schools, providing fencing for schools, reforestation, a solar plant in a remote community, eco-stoves to single mothers, and scholarships to deserving students. Several of our members participated in this very rewarding trip. We can’t wait to hear about their trip when they return!  Photo: Eva Hainer shares a moment with some of the girls she met in Belize.

  • The International Committee funded $1,000 for Days for Girls, a non-profit providing sanitary supplies to girls in Third World countries. This allows the girls to attend school all year. The committee also funded Debo for $1,500.  Debo operates in Ethiopia providing educational and economic development assistance ensuring they have the tools and support to succeed.
Holocaust Remembrance Day Tour at the Ronald Reagan Presidental Library
Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day) falls on April 18. Given the alarming increase in Anti-Semitic attacks here and abroad, this Remembrance Day is more important now than ever before. As a club we have gathered to remember the innocents murdered during that horrific time.  In doing this we are living the words “Never Again.” In the past our programs have been at our meetings. This year a special opportunity has presented itself. At the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library there will be a traveling exhibit called, “Auschwitz: Not Long Ago, Not Far Away.” This ground- breaking exhibition brings together more than 700 original artifacts and 400 photographs from over 20 institutions from around the world.

Our group has reserved 10:30 a.m. on Sunday April 23 to view the exhibit.  The tour will take about 2 to 3 hours. Lunch options are currently being discussed. After the tour you will have access to the library itself. I am sure that this will be an impactful and emotional experience that we can share together as a club. The cost to attend for groups of 25 or more:  Adults (age 18-61)  $27.95   Seniors (62+)  $24.95

It is important that you RSVP as soon as possible to ensure that we have the sufficient attendees for a group discount. We have 30 slots reserved and if we go over that number, the library needs to know ASAP. Friends and family are encouraged to attend.

Payment should be made out to the Rotary Club of Woodland Hills by check only. We must pay as a group. Please bring your checks to our next meeting. Please RSVP TO Mona Spector mona48ras@gmail.comYou can visit: the Reagan Library website www.reaganfoundation.org to learn more.

Chefs at the Rescue Mission
Members arrived at 4:30 and were out at 7:00 p.m.  They prepped, cooked, served, and cleaned for 60+ people who need a helping hand.  This night's meal included fajita bowls, taquitos and chocolate chip cookies. The cooking nights at the Rescue Mission are a wonderful opportunity to practice Service Above Self.  Click on the far left photo for a message from the Rescue Mission.

Pakistan Women: Bigger than Polio
Did you know that women make up two-thirds of Pakistan’s polio workforce? The role of female vaccinators is vital, and their work is neither safe nor easy. They’re fighting misinformation and pushing Rotary toward the finish line.

The role of female vaccinators is born of necessity. Because of cultural norms, men are not allowed into many Pakistanis' homes. Women who provide the health care are the key link. They can build mom-to-mom relationships and provide trusted advice on not only polio but other health issues.

“Women working with women on the front line is going to be what gets us across the finish line,” says Rotary President Jennifer Jones, who met last year with polio workers in Pakistan. Pakistan and Afghanistan are the only two countries where wild poliovirus is still persistently transmitted. Click on the graphic to learn more.
Rotary Peace Fellowship
Rotary International is now accepting Peace Fellowship applications for the 2024-25 academic year. Candidates have until May 15 to submit applications to The Rotary Foundation. Since the program began in 2002, the Rotary Peace Centers have trained more than 1,600 fellows who now work in more than 140 countries. Many serve as leaders in governments; NGOs; education and research institutions; peacekeeping and law enforcement agencies; and international organizations like the United Nations and the World Bank. Accepted candidates study peace and development issues with research-informed teaching and a diverse student body. The programs last 15 to 24 months and include a two- to three-month field study, which participants design themselves. Here is a link to the application. Rotary endorsers must submit endorsements to The Rotary Foundation by 1 July. Find endorsement instructions at rotary.org/endorsepeacefellows.
Africa Rotary Service Trip
Peter Lattey from the Rotary Club of Redondo Beach is organizing a two-week Rotary Safari to Kenya starting on July 8, 2023. In addition to seeing the incredible wildlife, the group will turn the water taps on in a village that is getting clean water through a Rotary Global Grant. You’ll have the opportunity to experience the culture of the Luo, Kuria and Masaai tribes, and participate in tree planting with Rotarians and Rotaractors. If you are interested in this Rotary trip, email Peter.
