Shelley's Musings

Dear fellow Rotarians,

Spring is in the air and new ideas and projects are blooming throughout The Woodland Hills Rotary Club.  We have a lineup of fascinating speakers and a fun (yet to be announced) social on the last Wednesday night of the month.

Here's what we've been up to! Our International Service Committee donated $1,000 to be part of a Global grant to provide clean water, sanitation and economic development to people in need in Ghana.  Youth and Community services committees partnered to donate a total of $2,500 to support "The Woodland" and preschool, a residence in Woodland Hills for homeless mothers and children.  Youth services donated another $1,500 for Loving Home Hospice for children.  Community service is also donating $1,500 to Ronald McDonald House. The funds will be used to make snack packs, celebration packages, stress relief kits and laundry kits for their residents.

We will be announcing another Gather & Give Saturday for March so that we can put these kits together and also have a special time to socialize. We are looking forward to having another chance to deliver these items to the Ronald McDonald House and visit with them.

Congratulations to Lonnie and Christina Mintz who welcomed a beautiful baby girl, Hannah Elizabeth.  Hannah is both adorable and sassy and is destined to become a member of The Woodland Hills Rotary Club.  Congratulations!!!!

Please take some time this month to smell the roses and to continue doing random acts of kindness throughout our community.

Warmly,

Shelley

Diane Nelson: Rotary of the Month
Diane Nelson is March's Rotarian of the Month. Diane is a long time Rotarian of the Woodland Hills Rotary Club following in the footsteps of her father, Leo Levy, who was also a Rotarian.  Diane presently serves as Treasurer on our foundation board.  I want to thank Diane for being one of my mentors this year.  Her timely reminders and advice have helped me greatly and have been very much appreciated.  Diane is also the force behind our beautiful monthly newsletter this year!  I thank her for her time and effort in creating a wonderful and informative newsletter with the help of Michael Turner that our club and many others can enjoy and learn about what our fabulous club is up to!  Thank you Diane.
Holocaust Remembrance Day Tour at the Ronald Reagan Presidental Library
Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day) falls on April 18. Given the alarming increase in Anti-Semitic attacks here and abroad, this Remembrance Day is more important now than ever before. As a club we have gathered to remember the innocents murdered during that horrific time.  In doing this we are living the words “Never Again.” In the past our programs have been at our meetings. This year a special opportunity has presented itself. At the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library there will be a traveling exhibit called, “Auschwitz: Not Long Ago, Not Far Away.” This ground- breaking exhibition brings together more than 700 original artifacts and 400 photographs from over 20 institutions from around the world.

Our group has reserved 10:30am reserved on Sunday April 23 to view the exhibit.  The tour will take about 2 to 3 hours. Lunch options are currently being discussed. After the tour you will have access to the library itself. I am sure that this will be an impactful and emotional experience that we can share together as a club. The cost to attend for groups of 25 or more:  Adults (age 18-61)  $27.95   Seniors (62+)  $24.95

It is important that you RSVP as soon as possible to ensure that we have the sufficient attendees for a group discount. We have 30 slots reserved and if we go over that number, the library needs to know ASAP. Friends and family are encouraged to attend.

Payment should be made out to the Rotary Club of Woodland Hills by check only. We must pay as a group. Please bring your checks to our next meeting. Please RSVP TO Mona Spector mona48ras@gmail.comYou can visit: the Reagan Library website www.reaganfoundation.org to learn more.

Manna of Conejo Valley
Leanne Portzel, Executive Director of Manna of Conejo Valley spoke at the club's Feb. 8 meeting. The food insecure get what they want and need from this great pantry organization. The pantry has helped about 250 new families this year! Manna is not formally affiliated with any religious organization, nor are we federally funded in any way. In fact, Manna exists almost entirely on private donations of food and funding. More than 95% of the food Manna distributes each year is donated by organizations, businesses and individuals from around the Conejo Valley. Funding is provided through generous donors and grant writing efforts. Of the 8,500 served annually, 40% are Hispanic; 34% white; 10% disabled; and 16% seniors. Foster kids who age out of the system at 18 are in dire need of help. People can shop at Manna free of charge, along with the others who have needs. Manna has been around for 52 years and they need your fruit and vegetables from your garden!!! At the holidays, Vons Market asked upon checkout if you wanted to donate to feed the needy. Part of the money went to Manna. They are supported by churches, temples, Rotary Clubs! Schools. How can we help?
  • Donate money
  • Donate food
  • Personal items and toilet paper and paper towels are needed.
