A Life of Service… Like in “Service above Self”
I am paraphrasing herein something I recently read and liked about “SERVICE.” Life should be chiefly of service. Being of service to the needs of our family, of our community and of the worlds less fortunate gives purpose. Without that idea, the intelligence and faith that a purposeful life has given you is empty if you’re not reaching out toward its simple goal. When in service you forget the little self but you will feel the big self, the self of spirit, purpose and meaning.
As the vital rays of the sun nurture us all, so should we all spread the “Rays of Hope” into the hearts of the poor and forsaken, kindle courage in the hearts of the despondent, and to light a new strength into the hearts of those who doubt that they can succeed and feel only lost and without hope.
When you realize that life can be a truly joyous “Battle of Duty” and at the same time is a passing dream that should never be squandered. When you become filled with the joy of making others Happy, by giving them kindness and peace and in God's eyes your life is then a personal success. The feeling of personal fulfillment you’ll experience will confirm it!

There is just three short months of the Rotary year left now and I look forward to the coming projects and events plus many opportunities for camaraderie and fellowship that we have planned. I would also like to express my gratitude to each and every one of you that have helped make this one of the most rewarding times of my life. To those of you that have so generously committed your time, your money, your ideas and your energies, I am truly humbled.
Some of the things that we’ve done most recently are:
- 3 – 2 - 1 End Polio Picnic at Griffith Park
- A fun “Pot Luck” evening at Barry Vergas’ home
- The 1st Rotary Peace Committee meeting for our Club
- Several exciting Program Speakers
- Blessing Bag project collection and assembly for homeless
- Vocational project of #Get Empowered Get Employed# for Taft High School students
- Wonderful monthly music nights at Neal Goldman home
- 2nd Thursday of the month Rotary Networking Meeting Mixers
- 4th Thursday of the month Happy Hour Social Mixers including our recent “Steak and Lobster” nite and Taco’s and Guacamole at El Torito
- Exam Room table acquired for new Rotocare office
Some of the things that we are doing in the next few weeks are:
- The Delivery of 100 Blessing Bags to Skid Row Homeless on Sunday 4/3
- Rotary Day of Service on Saturday 4/16 - Balboa Bridge repainting
- Annual Arts and Crafts Faire with the West Valley-Warner Center Chamber of Commerce on the weekend of 4/23 - 4/24
- The much anticipated Dinner for Donors Fundraiser at the Saltzman’s Villa
- The District “Youth” Breakfast on Tuesday 4/5
- The District Conference at San Diego’s Mission Bay Hilton from 4/29 – 5/1
- Delivery of our handmade baby blankets to the Military Families of Camp Pendleton
- Vision to Learn project will be providing glasses to the underserved summer school children of the West Valley Boys and Girls Club Thanks to our club
The final three months of the Rotary year are going to be just as exciting, productive and enlightening for those of you that choose to join us by attending our meetings and participating in our projects and events and thereby sharing in the joy and pleasure of “Service above Self.”
Let me leave you with a request that every one of you take a minute out of your day and send all the positive Rotary prayers and healing thoughts and good wishes you have to all of our Rotary Family Members that are currently in need of our at this time.

When each one of you accepted your invitation to join Rotary, you were chosen by someone that knew that you were the type of person that wants to make a difference in our local and global communities and has the ability and desire to do just that.
I see the talent, passion and commitment in each of you at our meetings, projects and events and it makes me very proud and humble to be your President. God Bless you all.
