Some months ago the club agreed to participate in two Summer Nights Lights events with Fleet Street. In reliance upon your promised participation, Fleet Street entered into a binding contract with the Mayor's office. Some of you did not respond, either to the e-mail announcement or the two meeting announcements. Some of you only signed up once. But the biggest problem is that for the four less convenient locations, there are only three of the needed 20 volunteers. Below are the locations where we need volunteers. I also listed the number of Rotarians who have volunteered. The times is from 6 to 10:30 p.m. |

80-year-old Holocaust Survivor and Author
Jul 15, 2015
Dr. Erica Miller, an 80-year-old Holocaust survivor and author of Thanks for My Journey: A Holocaust Survivor’s Story of Living Fearlessly, will speak at the July 15 lunch meeting of the Rotary Club of Woodland Hills. Dr. Miller was born in Tshernovitz, Romania, and when she was seven-years-old the Nazis forced her and her family into a holding camp in the Ukraine, where they remained for four harrowing years before being liberated. Their relief was short lived because when they returned to their home they found it occupied by Russians. Only when the family immigrated to Israel was Dr. Miller given the chance to escape the horrors of oppression and begin a new chapter in her life. Facing obstacles most of us would find insurmountable, Dr. Miller served in the Israeli air force and then went on to earn a Ph.D. in clinical psychology in America. As a dedicated mental health professional, she founded a chain of clinics that have helped hundreds of patients heal from a cycle of violence and abuse. A story of hardship, perseverance, and ultimate victory, Thanks for My Journey also in- cludes a special section in which Dr. Miller shares her inspirational reflections on such topics as gender roles, being Jewish, and the power in being true to oneself. The cost to attend the luncheon for WH Rotary members is $20 and $25 for guests. To make reservations, call 818-754-4743 or e-mail: whrotary726@gmail.com. |

Printers and Patents
Jul 22, 2015
Mike Harris has focused his legal practice on intellectual property as well as patent and trademark filings. He started his career as a patent examiner with the United States Patent and Trademark Office during law school. He spent most of his career as a partner of Poms, Smith, Lande & Rose, a former intellectual property boutique in Los Angeles. When Poms, Smith merged with the international firm of Oppenheimer Wolfe and Donnelly, Harris became a partner of that firm. He then joined Kleinberg & Lerner in 2003. While he was in those firms, he spent most of his time litigating patent and trademark matters in the federal court in Los Angeles and in other federal courts in California and elsewhere in the United States. However, he continued filing and prosecuting patent and trademark applications and advising clients about potential infringement and avoiding infringement. In 2007, Harris joined SoCal IP Law Group in as a partner. |

Last summer, Mayor Eric Garcetti announced the Great Streets Initiative for 15 streets throughout the City of Los Angeles. Being an iconic street in the San Fernando Valley with wide sidewalks and mid-century modern architectural features, Reseda Boulevard was selected to be a Great Street. In celebration of the unveiling of the Phase Two improvements made along Reseda Blvd., we will be hosting an art walk and scavenger hunt to highlight the changes that have been made along the boulevard. Various businesses have committed to discounting prices and showcasing artwork hosted by local artists. Other activities include live music, free bike share facilities/bike valet, live artwork, henna tattoos, arts & crafts for all ages, photo booths, and food sampling. Fleet Street will be doing a free Bike Share/Loan for people who wan to borrow a bike to ride on the new bike lane and "Bike Art" event for kids. We need sic to eight Rotarians and volunteers for setting up, monitoring and contracting the bike share, supervising the art activities, and tearing down. The event will take place on Reseda Blvd. between Parthenia St. and Nordhoff St. in Northrdige. |

For more than half of the adults in Los Angeles County, the most difficult part of getting a job isn't the interview-- it's filling out the application. Los Angeles has the highest rate of functionally illiterate adults in any major city in the U.S. Join Kelly Tyler, Senior Librarian of Adult Literacy, LA Public Library, in a stimulating conversation on the impact of adult illiteracy. All Rotarians are welcome to attend this complimentary event, but especially literacy chairs, vocational service chairs, and Rotarians looking to learn more about literacy. Sociology and Her Book, The Kitty Genovese Story
Aug 19, 2015
Kitty Genovese: A True Account of a Public Murder and its Private Consequences cuts through misinformation and conjecture to present a definitive portrait of the crime, the aftermath, and the people. Based on six years of exhaustive research, Catherine Pelonero’s book presents the facts from the police reports, archival material, court documents and first-hand interviews. Pelonero offers a personal look at Kitty Genovese, an ambitious young woman viciously struck down in the prime of her life; Winston Moseley, the killer who led a double life as a responsible family man by day and a deadly predator by night; and the consequences for a community condemned and others touched by the tragedy. The book gives a deeper look, shedding new light on the crime and the real people behind an iconic incident in American history. |

Kids’ vision issues often go undetected, with as many as one in five children lacking the ability to see clearly. Students with impaired vision can struggle to read a book, study math, see the board, or even participate in class—all of which can result in poor grades and adversely affect academic achievement. Vision To Learn alters these outcomes by coordinating screenings for children, and supplying those in need with eye exams and glasses—an age-old yet critical tool for success. UCLA research shows Vision To Learn succeeds in having a positive and direct impact on education: grades have improved for kids helped by Vision To Learn; and with large groups of children being helped at once, not only does receiving new glasses become a shared experience, but teachers have noted an improved learning environment in entire classrooms as a result. |

Forever Found
Sep 16, 2015
Forever Found exists to prevent, rescue and restore child trafficking victims. "By awakening our communities to the cries of sexually trafficked and oppressed children, inspiring people everywhere to DO SOMETHING, and strategically enabling the rescue of more and more children globally Forever Found is seeing lives restored!" "There is nothing on this earth more beautiful than a child, more inspiring than their purity and freedom, and more devastating than when these intrinsic qualities are stolen from them. That is why Forever Found’s heart beats to not only prevent the exploitation of children TODAY, not only to rescue those enslaved, but allow each child the opportunity to find restoration. TO BE FREE." |

Communities in Schools
Sep 23, 2015
For nearly 40 years, Communities In Schools has been helping students achieve in school, graduate and go on to bright futures. Our mission is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life. The story of Communities In Schools began in the 1970s, when Founder Bill Milliken, then a youth advocate in New York City, came up with the idea of bringing community resources inside public schools – where they are accessible, coordinated and accountable. “It’s relationships, not programs, that change children,” Bill once said. “A great program simply creates the environment for healthy relationships to form between adults and children. Young people thrive when adults care about them on a one-to-one level, and when they also have a sense of belonging to a caring community.” |

Los Angeles City Attorney Mike Feuer has long been one of California's leading lawyers and lawmakers. Now, as L.A.’s chief lawyer and prosecutor, he has brought an innovative, problem-solving focus to the office that combines tough and effective prosecution with initiatives to improve the quality of life throughout the city. In his first two years as City Attorney, he has nearly tripled the Neighborhood Prosecutor Program, formed a strike force to combat illegal dumping, closed nearly 600 of the City’s unlawful medical marijuana dispensaries, cracked down on identity theft, and targeted polluters. A leader in preventing gun violence, he created a Gun Violence Prevention Unit in his office and has worked aggressively to keep guns out the hands of criminals and children. In a groundbreaking national effort, he joined with Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance, Jr. to co-found and chair Prosecutors Against Gun Violence--an independent, non-partisan coalition devoted to prosecutorial and policy solutions to the public health and safety crisis of gun violence. City Attorney Feuer previously served as the Majority Policy Leader of the California Assembly and Chair of the Assembly's Judiciary Committee. He was also a member of the Los Angeles City Council where he was Chair of the Council’s Budget and Finance Committee. Four years ago, the Neighborhood Prosecutor Program was cut back because of budget restraints. Feuer aims to expand it to 21 prosecutors in the wake of community complaints. “Neighborhood prosecutors are community problem solvers,” Feuer said in a statement, “and make a real difference in people’s daily lives.” Karine Phillips, neighborhood prosecutor for the Topanga Division, is a native of Moscow, is fluent in Russian and Armenian. She was raised in Los Feliz and graduated from the University of Southern California. Philips then earned a a JD from the USC Gould School of Law.
She was hired by the City Attorney’s Office in 1997, then assigned to the Domestic Violence Unit, where she prosecuted hundreds of cases of spousal, child, elder, sexual and other abuse. She later went into private practice before returning to the city. |
